Pulmonary hypertension
Pulmonary hypertension from the point of view of Ayurveda
Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. Blood vessels in the lungs are narrowed, blocked or destroyed. The damage slows blood flow through the lungs, and blood pressure in the lung arteries rises. The heart must work harder to pump blood through the lungs. The extra effort eventually causes the heart muscle to become weak and fail.
Pulmonary hypertension is classified into five groups, depending on the cause. Changes in the cells that line the pulmonary arteries can cause the walls of the arteries to become stiff, swollen and thick. These changes may slow down or block blood flow through the lungs, causing pulmonary hypertension.
HOW AYURVEDIC DOCTORS TREAT PULMONARY HYPERTENSION
According to Ayurveda the Pulmonary arterial hypertension is due to imbalance of all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, & Kapha) . In Ayurveda there are various herbs that are formulated to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and balance all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) naturally.
There is a resistance to the flow of blood in this condition which is marked by the vitiation of Kapha dosha, lungs are considered as the seat of Kapha dosha. According to Ayurveda , Kapha dosha is located in the chest, throat, head, pancreas, bone joints, stomach, small intestine, plasma, fat, nose, and tongue. Kapha dosha is increased due to the low digestive fire or Agni at the level of Rasa dhatu which is considered as the first tissue according to Ayurveda. Low digestive fire is caused by a multitude of factors such as wrong diet and lifestyle, taking incompatible foods, lack of exercise and many other factors.
Ayurvedic treatment include detoxification therapies using Panchkarma, massage treatments, in cases of lung disease also Ayurvedic applications and Lepa therapies herbal supplements . All techniques are determined by the attending Ayurvedic doctor during the consultation.
