Pulmonary edema

Pulmonary edema from the point of view of Ayurveda

Pulmonary edema is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. This can make breathing difficult.

When you inhale, your lungs should be filled with air. In the case of pulmonary edema, they fill with fluid. When this happens, oxygen from the air cannot get from the lungs into the bloodstream where it is needed.

There are two main kinds of pulmonary edema: cardiogenic and noncardiogenic.

  • Cardiogenic pulmonary edema - This type is caused by a problem with heart. In many cases, left ventricle isn’t able to pump out blood that enters through blood vessels from lung. This creates a buildup of pressure and fluid. Narrow arteries, heart muscle damage, heart valve problems, and high blood pressure are among the conditions that can weaken your left ventricle.

  • Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema - Acute respiratory distress syndrome , Blood clots, Brain surgery or head injuries, High pressure in your chest after your airway is blocked, Contact with ammonia, chlorine, or other toxins, Inhaling smoke that has certain chemicals Lung injury after removal of blood clots, Near-drowning , Reaction to some drugs, Blood transfusion, Viral infections, Pneumonia, Blood poisoning or sepsis

HOW AYURVEDIC DOCTORS TREAT PULMONARY EDEMA

In Ayurveda, Vata controls the respiratory system. The imbalance in the ability of functioning in any of the three Doshas (Pitta, Kapha or Vata) in the body may lead to the formation and accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the respiratory tract. This toxin then induces an inflammatory response that results in the formation of the mucosa and blockage of the lung tissues. For treating edema, Abhayanga is generally done . Virechana ( a mild purgation therapy)  where herbs, herbal formulation and oils like castor oil is used to cleanse the body to eliminate toxins, fat, mucous and pitta. Lepa – is the application of medicated preparations in the form of plasters in the direction opposite to the growth of hair to reduce inflammatory swellings Ayurvedic medicine for pulmonary disease is Swarnabhrakasindura – its helps in treating asthma, cough, trembling of the chest, other herbal medication is Bronfree , Vasarishta, Chyavanaprasa.
