Prostatitis
Prostatitis from the point of view of Ayurveda
The prostate is both an accessory gland of the male reproductive system and a muscle-driven mechanical switch between urination and ejaculation. It is about the size of a walnut and is located between the bladder and the base of the penis. The tube that moves urine from the bladder to the penis (urethra) runs through the center of your prostate. The urethra also moves semen from the sex glands to the penis.
Prostatitis is swelling and inflammation of the prostate gland.
Several types of infections can affect the prostate.
There are four types of prostatitis:
Acute bacterial prostatitis is the most common type of prostatitis and is the easiest to diagnose. It can be life-threatening if left untreated.
Chronic bacterial prostatitis. Its symptoms are less intense and develop over several years. It mostly affects young and middle-aged men and cause recurring urinary tract infections.
Chronic prostatitis causes pain and discomfort around the groin and pelvic area.
Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. The prostate is inflamed, but there are no symptoms. It’s usually discovered when a doctor is diagnosing another problem.
Ayurvedic management for Prostatitis involves pacifying aggravated Vata Dosha,
strengthening the urinary system, and relieving the symptoms of enlargement.
How Ayurvedic doctors treat prostatitis
Ayurveda has a list of herbs, formulations, and procedures for prostatitis treatment.
Ayurvedic detox therapies (Panchakarma) are helpful in bringing balance and supporting management of enlarged prostate. Panchakarma detox therapies include drinking medicated ghee followed by therapeutic massage and herbal steam bath. Major Panchakarma procedures include enema (Vasti). Among many types of enemas, herbal oil enema is introduced to pacify Vata dosha and reduce the size of enlarged prostate.
There are some Ayurvedic herbs, used for prostatitis treatment:
Varuna
Shilajeet
Ashwagandha
Gokshura
Khadira
Ayurvedic medicinal herbs can be used for a long time, even in the elderly, without the risk of adverse side effects. Simple dietary and lifestyle changes can also support long-term health.
