Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds from the point of view of Ayurveda

Nose bleeding or epistaxis is a condition in which bleeding occurs from the nasal cavity or nostrils. This usually indicates an increase in body temperature or blood pressure, or some other systemic disorder. Most nosebleeds are benign, self-limiting, and spontaneous. Nosebleeds typically occur when the linings of the nose are disturbed or irritated.
Nosebleeds can be caused by certain heart diseases, pregnancy, bleeding disorders and acute general conditions such as typhoid, pneumonia, malaria, tropical fever, measles. The cause may also be an injury or trauma to the nose or the introduction of sharp objects into the nose.
Other causes of nasal bleeding:
alcohol consumption,
eating spicy and hot food,
prolonged exposure to excessive dry heat,
sinus infection in the nasal cavity caused by any nose surgery,
excessive sneezing,
blowing your nose repeatedly,
allergic rhinitis,
tumors or polyps in the nose,
colds,
excessive use of nasal sprays.
According to Ayurveda, nosebleeds are caused by dosha imbalances. When the levels of Vata and Pitta dosha in the body increase, the blood tissue (rakta dhatu) increases too and causes nosebleeds.

How Ayurvedic doctors treat nosebleeds

Ayurveda recommends the following treatments for Epistaxis based on the degree and progression of the disease:
Nasya is an Ayurvedic therapy that has dual action: pacification and purification. Anu tail nasya is specially recommended for nose bleeding – a herbal and ayurvedic oil are administrated through the nasal passage. It mainly balances the doshas.
Patra Pinda Sweda is a procedure in which medicinal herbs are applied to the entire body. The leaves of various medicinal plants have different properties that help relieve pain, inflammation and improve blood circulation. The combination of herbs and the duration of the procedure are determined by an Ayurvedic doctor.
Ayurveda offers a wide range of treatments for nosebleeds. Please choose the time of your consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor. The doctor will assess the situation and determine the best treatment for you.
