Migraine
Migraine from the point of view of Ayurveda
Migraine is a neurological disorder that causes intense, pulsing attacks that feel like
headaches. The pulsing pain generally occurs in the forehead, on the one side of the head, or around the eyes. The headache increasingly gets worse.
It is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, numbness, tingling, sensitivity to light
and sound. Migraine symptoms may begin one to two days before the headache
itself.
Migraine attacks can last from 4-72 hours and the pain can be severe. The length and intensity of these phases can occur to different degrees in different people.
There are types of migraine:
classical migraines,
common migraines,
chronic migraine,
menstrual migraine.
Migraine in Ayurveda is called Ardhavabedhaka.
According to Ayurveda, Vata and Pitta doshas increase in migraines. Often migraine is associated with a previous history of acidity, digestive problems.
How Ayurvedic doctors treat migraine
Ayurveda treatment for migraine include body detoxification, intake of herbal remedies, dietary and lifestyle changes and relaxation techniques as Yoga and Pranayama.
Panchakarma therapy is meant to detoxify, or purify the body. To remove toxins contributing to your migraine is a very effective and important factor. Examples of purification treatments include: pouring medicated oil into the nose (Nasya karma), whole body oil massage (Abyangam or other), eating medicated ghee, sweating therapy (Swedana), Samshodhana, Kaya virechana (therapeutic purgation). Panchakarma therapies also involve lifestyle changes to promote overall wellness.
Yoga is an ancient practice that brings together mind and body. It incorporates various breathing techniques and poses to promote relaxation. By calming mind and body, yoga helps ease stress and anxiety and may also reduce sensitivity to pain, including migraine pain.
