LEUCORRHOEA

Leucorrhoea from the point of view of Ayurveda

Leucorrhea or white discharge is a condition in which white, yellowish and sticky substances are released from the vagina. Discharge is normal for women, and every woman experiences this during their reproductive years. If discharge exceeds the normal point and becomes a thick white or yellow liquid with an unpleasant odor, it is called leucorrhea. The color of the discharge may vary and depends upon the menstrual cycle. It may not lead to any complaint like pain, itching, irritation, or burning sensation. Any infection, malignancy, and change in hormones, can cause an abnormal discharge from the vagina. Hormonal imbalance, especially of estrogen, is the major cause for the excess of vaginal white discharge. Secondary sexual characteristics also play an important role. Estrogen is the main hormone that regulates body functions in females. Untreated or ignored leucorrhea for a long time can become a chronic or severe infection. Other complications of leucorrhea include miscarriage, endometriosis, cervical erosion, scarring of the fallopian tube, difficulties in becoming pregnant.

There are two types of leucorrhea:

  • Physiological leucorrhea. It mainly occurs due to the imbalance of hormones at the time of the ovulation period, early days of pregnancy and during sexual excitement.
  • Pathological leucorrhea. It occurs due to the malfunctioning or disease in the female reproductive system.
According to Ayurveda, leucorrhea is connected with “Shweta Pradara” — per the symptoms, it is a Kapha disorder, because in the body Kapha dosha is the major causative factor for any discharge.
Ayurvedic Leucorrhea treatment comprises restoring the digestive fire of the body in order to cleanse the accumulated toxins and balance Kapha.

HOW AYURVEDIC DOCTORS TREAT LEUCORRHOEA

General treatment for Leucorrhea is Yoni prakshalana, a special remedy for gynecology complaints. It is a process of cleaning the vagina and vulva using medicated oils. Ayurvedic doctors recommend local applications to treat leucorrhoea.
Ayurvedic doctors usually prescribe rejuvenating herbs to tone the reproductive system.
