Hyperacidity
Hyperacidity from the point of view of Ayurveda
Hyperacidity or Amlapitta is one of the most common diseases. “Amla” means sour, and “Pitta'' means heat. This condition is the result of an excessive increase of Pitta dosha in the body.
Stomach normally secretes acids that are essential in the digestive process. When there is excess production of acid in the stomach, it results in a condition known as hyperacidity. If the acidity of the environment of the stomach becomes more than the required level, it leads to discomfort.
The level of acid increases in the stomach, due to various reasons like improper eating habits, various illnesses and prolonged intake of medicines like antibiotics, oral contraceptives and antidepressants, also steroids, painkillers and blood pressure medications. Other factors like irregular sleeping patterns, overeating, stress, anxiety, hypertension, pregnancy, fasting, obesity and aging are the main reasons of hyperacidity.
How Ayurvedic doctors treat hyperacidity
For hyperacidity treatment, Ayurveda recommends therapies that pacify the aggravated Pitta dosha and reduce Ama (toxins) in the body. Ayurvedic supplements stimulate the stomach to produce more mucus, to absorb the excess acid produced, thereby it relieves symptoms of hyperacidity.
Procedures such as Panchakarma therapies like Vamana (emesis) or Virechana (purgation), are effective in treating the symptoms of hyperacidity. In chronic cases Asthana Basti (medicated enema) is indicated.
Herbs like gooseberry, cumin seeds, and tulsi are the best Ayurvedic treatments for hyperacidity. Amlant is an Ayurvedic medicine composed of different Ayurvedic herbs such as Mishri and Vaidang, Haritaki, Vibhitaki, Lawang, Pipli. It helps reduce burning, inflammation, and cramping, and helps relieve indigestion as a soothing and relaxing remedy.
