Bruxism from the point of view of Ayurveda
Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (also called bruxism) is often related to stress or anxiety. Unconscious grinding or clenching of teeth while awake is called awake bruxism and grinding teeth while asleep is called sleep bruxism.
Awake bruxism may be due to anxiety, stress, anger, frustration, or tension. Sleep bruxism is more likely to be a sign of sleep disorders, such as snoring and sleep apnea.
Teeth grinding can also be associated with gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) and may indicate parasites in the body. Severe bruxism can lead to tooth damage and loss, tension headaches, and jaw pain.
In Ayurveda, sleep imbalances are classified according to the doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. According to Ayurveda, in bruxism, the aggravated Vata dosha resides in the oral cavity and teeth.
Ayurveda educates the patient and shows the way to correct dosha imbalance using home and natural remedies.
How Ayurvedic doctors treat bruxism
Ayurvedic treatment uses a holistic, systemic approach, rather than focusing only on the disorder. There are few Ayurvedic therapies, effective for bruxism treatment:
- Svedam — local fermentation
- Gandusha and Kavala — gargling
- Dandadhavana — tooth cleaning
- Shodhana — purification therapy
The most common Ayurvedic medicines for Bruxism are Punarnavadi kashayam, Guduchyadi kashayam, Triphala guggulu.
Tips for effective Ayurvedic treatment of bruxism
- Avoid foods that lead to Vata dosha imbalance, such as cold, dry, and indigestible foods
- Apply a few drops of ghee on the crown of teeth
- Gargle with warm water mixed with salt
- Drink warm milk at bedtime
- Include carbohydrates in your diet: almonds, raisins, cherry, eggs, ghee
- Reduce coffee, bread, pastries
- Practice meditation and yoga to stabilize your mental and emotional health
